How Long Does Hydrogen Stay in Water After It's Made?

Hydrogen is the smallest molecule there is, and it does not like to stay put. That one fact explains why so many new owners ask the same thing: how long does hydrogen water last once it is made?

Here is the short version. In one research team's tests, sealed hydrogen water held its level for seven days, and the same team advised drinking an opened container within about two hours. Nothing in that asks anything of you. Fill it, run it, drink it, and the timing takes care of itself.

Two owners show how simple this looks in real life. Gerard, an attorney in New York State, carries a glass to the office. Kenneth, a life coach, pours the first glass of his day and the last. Their stories run alongside the research below.

The Short Answer: Drink It Fresh and Enjoy the Easy Part

Dissolved hydrogen leaves water gradually, not all at once. Researchers who tracked it reported measurable drops one hour and again two hours after a container was opened, which is why the common advice is to drink hydrogen water soon after you pour it.

Soon is not a stopwatch. A glass poured with breakfast and finished with breakfast is exactly the pattern the research points to (and exactly what most owners already do). Pour. Drink. Done.

What One Research Team Measured

Kurokawa and colleagues (2015) published the clearest dissipation numbers we found in the PubMed literature, reporting on pressurized, super-saturated hydrogen water that the team prepared at roughly 7 ppm and 10 ppm and then followed over time, with and without the cap removed.

The Sealed Result

Left unopened, the first preparation measured about 7 ppm at 24 hours and above 8 ppm at seven days, with that seven-day reading carrying a wider margin (8.30 ± 0.98 ppm). The second preparation measured about 10 ppm at both 24 hours and seven days. The authors' conclusion covered both preparations: the concentration is maintained for at least seven days without opening.

The Opened Result

Once the cap came off, the numbers moved. The authors reported significant drops at one hour and again at two hours, and they suggested drinking within two hours of opening. They also noted that an opened container should not hold extra air space.

Why Hydrogen Slips Away From Water

Hydrogen gas dissolves in water only sparingly. Johnsen et al. (2023) reviewed 81 clinical trials and 64 human-study publications and described hydrogen's low solubility as one of the challenges that runs across every administration method they examined.

The Saturation Ceiling

Asada et al. (2020) made hydrogen water from tap water by alternating-current electrolysis in 20 to 30 minutes and measured 1.55 mg/L of dissolved hydrogen, which they described as close to the theoretical maximum of 1.6 mg/L.

What an Open Glass Means

Water and the air above it are always trading gas. The opened-container results fit that picture: a glass in open air gives hydrogen room to leave, so a fresh pour is the natural habit, and a gentle one.

What Researchers Found About Container Materials

Tanaka and colleagues (2020) tested how hydrogen water held up in different containers, and they reported that hydrogen diffusion from the inside to the outside was extremely small even after 12 hours for aluminum and stainless steel containers, though not for containers made of diverse plastics.

Metal Containers

In the Tanaka data, aluminum and stainless steel both kept hydrogen in place through the 12-hour test.

Plastic Containers

Plastics behaved differently, and the authors framed the work around which container materials suit hydrogen-water preservation.

How Researchers Measure Dissolved Hydrogen

Measuring a gas that wants to escape takes care, so labs have settled on a short list of methods.

Gas Chromatography

Gas chromatography is the gold standard. Liu et al. (2014) used a high-quality sensor gas chromatography method on rat tissue samples and prepared those specimens in airtight tubes, which the authors said allowed a sensitive and stable determination of hydrogen concentration.

Dissolved Hydrogen Meters

For everyday readings, electrochemical dissolved hydrogen meters (the Trustlex ENH-1000 is one example) measure water directly. Our guide to ppm, ppb and ORP explains those numbers in plain language.

Putting the Numbers Together

Line the findings up and a clear pattern appears. Sealed hydrogen water held its level for a full week in the Kurokawa tests, aluminum and stainless steel kept hydrogen in place through the Tanaka 12-hour test, and open air let levels fall at one hour and again at two. None of this calls for a plan or a schedule. A glass poured fresh and enjoyed while it is fresh sidesteps the whole question, and that is the one habit worth keeping.

Gerard's Honeymoon Conversation and Work-Day Glass

Gerard first heard about hydrogen water on his honeymoon in Kauai in February 2026, when people he met were using a hydrogen machine, and the conversation followed him home to New York.

Back home, the attorney did what he does for a living. He read the studies behind molecular hydrogen, listened to owners on YouTube, and compared his options before choosing the Lourdes Hydrofix Premium Edition.

Setup was the easy part. "It was easy to assemble the machine," Gerard said. Since May he has drunk hydrogen water before meals, and he fills a travel container to take to work, so the glass that travels with him is a glass he drinks soon.

Kenneth's First Glass and Last

Kenneth calls his hydrogen water "the first thing I have in the morning, and probably the last thing I sip on at night." Before the Lourdes Hydrofix, he had cycled through a reverse osmosis system, an alkalizing machine and a combined unit tucked under the sink.

When his machine arrived, setup "didn't take long at all," and he describes it as "simple in the sense of how you use it." He goes through one to two pitchers a day. "When that water hits, it's just refreshing," Kenneth says, and he still looks forward to the glass every morning.

A Simple Routine: Fill It, Run It, Drink It

The routine fits in one breath. Fill the machine with water, press the button, pour a glass, drink it. Most people drink within a few minutes of pouring.

The Morning Glass

Many owners tie the glass to breakfast. Our hydrogen water routine guide shows how owners fit it around the day, and the how-to-use guide walks through the machine in a few minutes.

The Evening Glass

Others pour a glass after dinner. Kenneth's last sip of the day is hydrogen water, and Gerard drinks his before meals. Anchor it to something you already do, and it becomes automatic.

Taking a Glass With You

Some days the glass leaves the house. Kenneth used the travel bags often in his early days, and Gerard brings a travel container to the office. Holy Hydrogen's H2 Bag accessory is there for glasses on the go, and it sits alongside the machine on the collection page below.

How the Lourdes Hydrofix Fits In

Given these findings, here's how the Lourdes Hydrofix Premium Edition fits: it makes hydrogen water at home, on demand, so the glass you pour is a fresh one. Holy Hydrogen distributes the machine, which uses separate-chamber (dual-chamber) electrolysis, and every unit is individually factory-tested and ships with a certificate of authenticity.

You can find the Lourdes Hydrofix in our hydrogen water generator collection.

Certificates You Can Look Up

Concentration matters. Purity matters at least as much. Japan Food Research Laboratories (JFRL), an independent testing lab, did not detect selected plasticizers, BPA, iron or titanium in water from the machine (Certificate No. JFRL 23028707001-0201). Masa International Corp., a third-party testing lab, performance-tested the hydrogen gas output (Test No. Masa International MM03-6024-01), and the marketed figure is approximately 120 mL/min, depending on usage conditions. A metallurgical certificate (No. 17-MANS-0078-B) covers the TP270C titanium at 99.928% purity. Every certificate is on our Certifications page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does hydrogen water last in a glass?

In one research team's tests, levels fell measurably within an hour of opening a container, and the team advised drinking within about two hours. Most owners drink within minutes of pouring, so the timing sorts itself out.

Does a metal container keep hydrogen in longer?

Tanaka et al. (2020) reported very little hydrogen escaping from aluminum or stainless steel containers over 12 hours, unlike containers made of diverse plastics.

How much hydrogen water do owners drink each day?

Many owners aim for roughly 2 liters a day, often starting with a glass or two in the morning, and Kenneth goes through one to two pitchers. Our guide on how much hydrogen water per day covers what owners commonly do.

Is there anything special to do once the machine finishes?

No. Pour a glass and drink it. Gerard and Kenneth both describe the routine as simple, and the machine is built so you do not have to think about it.
