A naturopathic doctor who is particular about his water
Arsallan Ahmad is a naturopathic doctor in the San Diego area, and he has thought harder about drinking water than most people ever will. He runs his water through reverse osmosis, keeps alkaline water on hand, and has been trying a device that draws drinking water out of the air. Every one of those choices comes back to the same goal. He wants to be "drinking much cleaner water than ever before in my life."
Hydrogen water fits into that picture for a plain reason. "I prefer to use hydrogen water because of the taste," he says. Local water was part of the problem. "The water in the San Diego area... tap water in particular, is not to my liking, so I prefer to use reverse osmosis water that is infused with hydrogen gas afterwards. It just tastes much better that way."
What makes his story a little different from most on this site is where the machine lives. "I actually do not use this at my home yet, but in the clinic and the office. So mostly patients and some of the other staff members are drinking the water besides myself." The Lourdes Hydrofix is the clinic's drinking-water source. A message on LinkedIn, and a conversation over Zoom
Ahmad did not find hydrogen the way many owners do, after months of reading and watching videos. He is candid that the price of the machine was the one thing that slowed him down. A hand-built Japanese electrolysis unit costs more than the bottles and tablets that fill online marketplaces. What settled the question was his own homework. Once he had looked at what he was buying and how it was made, his conclusion was short: "it was worth the investment."
He also went in with a particular mindset. He was not expecting to be wowed on day one. "I just wanted to try out the device and see how well it worked, so it was almost like an evaluation process as well." He skipped the bottles and tablets entirely. "I went straight to the machine." The plan was to run it in a busy clinic, let staff and visitors drink from it, and judge it over time.

Ahmad is honest that he did not run a head-to-head comparison. "I was not aware of the other hydrogen water options at the time. This one I researched in technology manufacturing from Japan." Setup was uneventful. "It was just fine. I had no issues," he says. He watched the orientation videos and was up and running. "I just did the orientation videos, YouTube videos, and I was perfectly fine. Pretty easy setup." He feeds the machine reverse osmosis water rather than tap. "I use reverse osmosis water, because I know that taste will be much better than tap water." Upkeep over almost four years has amounted to filter changes. "I've changed the filter in it a couple times, and so far, they're working great."
In the clinic, the Hydrofix works as a water station. Patients and staff pour a glass while they are in the office, and Ahmad drinks from it through his own workday. It is there so people can stay hydrated while they are in the office, the way another practice might keep a pitcher of filtered water in the waiting room. He uses the drinking side only. "I do not use the inhalation side, although I know the benefits. Mainly just drinking the water." The same machine can also produce hydrogen for inhalation, which he has not set up in the clinic.
He does have one practical tip for anyone drinking hydrogen water, at home or at work: "The key thing is to not heat the water." Hydrogen is a gas, and it leaves warm water quickly. Pour it cool and drink it fresh.
Nearly four years in, and a second machine for home
Ask Ahmad what has changed and he does not reach for a dramatic story. He was already a hydration advocate; the shift has been in what he pays attention to. "In the past, I've always been adamant about people hydrating more, but we didn't always talk about the quality or type of water, and I think that has become a huge shift into focus." For him that means cleaner source water first, and hydrogen added to it. He drinks more water because he likes how it tastes, and says he simply feels better hydrated. The clearest sign of what the machine means to him is the water he has been hauling home from the clinic. He is now thinking about a second unit so he can stop. "I would definitely invest in this, looking back," he says, and he "may decide to get another device just for home use as well." His reason is as practical as everything else he says: "Just the convenience of having another device so I don't have to carry large amounts of water back home from the clinic."
He does not have a speech for colleagues who ask about it. "I didn't have any background in information beforehand, so I just went forward with it." The closest thing to advice in his story is the way he approached it. He treated the purchase as an evaluation, put the machine where people would actually drink from it, and let years of daily use answer the question. Nearly four years on, his summary of how that has gone is three words long: "People love it."
