When it comes to treating sports-related injuries, there are many different approaches that can be taken. However, one area of research that has been gaining traction in recent years is the use of hydrogen therapy. A pilot study published in the journal “PloS one” looked at the effects of 2-week administration of hydrogen on the biochemical markers of inflammation and functional recovery in male professional athletes after acute soft tissue injury.

The study recruited 36 professional athletes who were examined by a certified sports medicine specialist within 24 hours of sustaining an injury. The subjects were then divided into three groups: a control group, a group that received oral hydrogen-rich tablets, and a group that received both oral tablets and topical hydrogen-rich packs.

The results of the study found that oral and topical hydrogen intervention was found to augment plasma viscosity decrease as compared with the control group. Additionally, oral and topical hydrogen intervention resulted in a faster return to normal joint range of motion for both flexion and extension of the injured limb as compared with the control intervention.

While these results are certainly promising, it’s important to note that this was a small pilot study and more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits of hydrogen therapy for sports-related injuries. However, the findings do suggest that hydrogen therapy may be a promising approach for treating inflammation and promoting recovery in individuals who have sustained soft tissue injuries.

One of the main benefits of hydrogen therapy is its anti-inflammatory effects. When injury occurs, inflammation is a natural response of the body to promote healing. However, excessive inflammation can prolong recovery time and lead to further tissue damage. Hydrogen therapy may help to reduce this excessive inflammation, which could ultimately lead to faster recovery times.

Another potential benefit of hydrogen therapy is its ability to reduce oxidative stress. Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the body’s ability to neutralize them. This can lead to cellular damage, which can further exacerbate inflammation and injury. By reducing oxidative stress, hydrogen therapy may help to protect the body’s cells and promote healing.

In conclusion, while more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits of hydrogen therapy for sports-related injuries, the preliminary results are promising. Hydrogen therapy may help to reduce inflammation and promote recovery in individuals who have sustained soft tissue injuries. It’s important to note that hydrogen therapy should not be used as a substitute for traditional medical treatment, but rather as a complementary therapy. If you are interested in trying hydrogen therapy for your sports-related injury, it’s important to speak with your doctor first to determine if it’s the right option for you.
